Thank You Stephen Colbert

July 18, 2025

I was shocked to hear that CBS is discontinuing “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert“. Stephen Colbert is one of my favorite comedians and social commentators. His “Colbert Report” was, along with “The Daily Show”, one of the smartest and funniest examinations of political punditry and culture ever to be broadcast. The “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” took on a more conventional format, but Colbert remained as hilarious and acerbic as ever in his monologues, always holding power to account, especially the unclothed emperor Donald Trump. I fear that Colbert’s penchant for political critique may be what got his show cancelled. CBS/Paramount need presidential approval for a pending merger with Skydance. If Colbert is a sacrifice to stroke Trump’s ego, it’s not only a disgusting decision, but evidence of the many ways Trump stifles free speech directly and indirectly. I’m very grateful to Colbert for using his voice courageously(and hilariously), and I don’t want to see a chilling effect for people like him… we need them. Colbert is from Charleston, S.C., where I grew up, and we went to the same school, though he is 6 years older. I was honored to be a guest on his show several times and to be asked to make art for his show as well. Thanks Stephen!
